From the vibrant old-time music scene in North Carolina comes Big Medicine with a refined string band style that kept its power and groove while drawing from numerous sources: old folks who grew up playing old-time music, relatives and friends, field recordings from the Great Depression, and old commercial "hillbilly" records, including early exponents of that kind of Southern string band music which came to be called bluegrass. Fiddler Kenny Jackson grew up and played in southern Indiana; banjoist Jim Collier is a native tarheel; Joe Newberry grew up in Central Missouri (Dave Para's roommate for a time) and was active in this folk scene before moving east 20 years ago; bassist Bobb Head has played in bands in Arizona and Texas.
