They call their music vaudevillian ragtime-blues and hillbilly swing. They call themselves The WIYOS, after a street gang in New York still obscure because it was "too cool to be included" in Martin Scorsese's film. Guitarist Parrish Ellis met percussionist Michael Farkas in a bar in Manhattan's lower east side one evening, and "Joebass" Dejarnette was visiting Parrish from out of town the next day. A guest-spot in a club turned into a two-hour jam, and they have not looked back, except for music that was hot when my grandparents were young trying to get away with whatever they could.
