Because Charlie Monroe played guitar for his brother Bill, the instrument is one of the early children in the bluegrass family. Its role remained largely supportive and rhythmic. Dan Crary did much to develop the lead role of the instrument stepping out for a break of its own while exploring the melodic and dynamic potential of an instrumental. Countless guitarists aspire to the power in Dan's playing that allows the flattop guitar to drive and even dominate the instrumental impact of the style.
