Where in the World Is the Volo Bog?

Volo Bogtrotters

In northern Illinois, of course, about 40 miles northwest of Chicago. Fans of old-time stringband music, however, will recognize the reference to the Ballard Branch Bogtrotters, who recorded some interesting sides in the 1930s. The Volo Bogtrotters, "a band with one foot in the 20s and another foot in the 90s," (now both are anachronistic) play old-time music with heart, spirit and humor. All five members of the band are versatile on several instruments and therefore offer a sound with the diversity in texture that excites many listeners to the music of that era.

The Volos are also respected collectors of traditional music in the Midwest and supplant their repertoire of songs from old 78s and field recordings with tunes they have learned from elder musicians in Illinois, Missouri, Indiana and Michigan.
